At St Vincent’s School in London, the Year 1 children (5-6 years old) explored their local environment in a sensory walk outside of school in the morning and later in their lessons created a poem based on the senses. We were inspired from the poem ‘In my Garden’, where the poet uses senses to describe her garden.
In later lessons they went onto identify features that belong and do not belong on the school field by observing the surrounding environment. We looked at maps of the school field and used our observations skills to identify different human and physical features to put on a map of the school grounds.
